Setting -
Roland, a hard drinking tycoon, is considering buying an
old Victorian house, once a brothel. His lawyer and the
landlord, a builder, arrive to complete the deal. Also in
the house are his wife, a frustrated dancer who is always
considering leaving him, her brother and later the
brother's fiancee, who is uncertain whether or not to run
away. In the course of one hectic night and morning,
these characters, each immersed in a personal problem,
try to sort themselves out. The first act curtain finds the
solicitor in bed with the wife thinking her to be a ghost
and the fiancee inadvertently shut in the attic cupboard
by the distraught tycoon who has taken refuge there in
the spare bed. All this takes place in a highly ingenious
and original setting in which all the rooms, passages and
stairs are on a single level.
Character ages may not reflect actor age. Auditions will
be cold readings from script.
Cast
Elizabeth , 30’s - Former dancer, retired as a result of her marriage; now in perpetual indecision about whether
to leave her husband; her effort to do so sets off much of the action in the play.
Mark, her brother, 30’s - Elizabeth's brother, attempting to save his one-sided relationship to Kitty and fulfill his
dream of opening a fishing tackle shop.
Tristram, Roland's Lawyer, late 20’s - inarticulate and unassertive; unwittingly causes absolute havoc. For
Ayckbourn, the plays author, for all of Tristram's apparent ineffectuality, his is the central role in the play.
Roland, her husband, 40’s - Elizabeth's unappreciative husband; a businessman who is a major presence in the
bucket industry; alcoholic.
Leslie, a builder, 30’s - Dodgy builder, on the brink financially; desperate to sell the house (currently rented)
to Roland.
Kitty, Mark’s fiancee, late 20’s - Arm-twisted into engagement with Mark; having left him at the altar once,
she has been persuaded to come back to him after her arrest for suspected solicitation; feels trapped into
always being part of other people's dreams (including Mark's fishing tackle shop).
